I may be a little partial, since I have the privilege of serving on the Board of the Council of International Investigators, but attending the CII meeting in Prague reminded me once again why this organization is so valuable. Yes, the education, speakers, and professional discussions are important, but for me, the real value is in the relationships. The time spent talking over dinner, sharing experiences between sessions, learning how other investigators approach their work, and simply getting to know one another creates a level of trust that cannot be built through an email or a LinkedIn connection. CII brings together investigators from around the world with very different backgrounds, specialties, and experiences. Those differences are exactly what make the organization so valuable. You never know when someone sitting across the table from you may have the expertise, geographic reach, or professional connection that becomes critical to a future case. And sometimes, the value is immediate. Simply by talking with fellow members in Prague about the work I do in Hawaiʻi and California, I came home with two new cases. No sales pitch. No formal marketing. Just conversations between professionals who had the opportunity to understand what I do and how I might help their clients. But even beyond the business opportunities, what stays with me most is the bonding, friendships, and relationships that develop at these meetings. When you travel across the world and spend several days together, colleagues become friends and professional contacts become people you genuinely know and trust. That is difficult to put a dollar value on. For anyone who belongs to a professional association but rarely attends the conferences or international meetings, I would encourage you to reconsider. Membership may get your name in the directory, but showing up is what builds relationships. Prague was a wonderful reminder that sometimes the most valuable part of a conference is not what happens at the podium. It is what happens around the table. Thank you to everyone at CII who made Prague such a memorable and productive experience. I am already looking forward to the next one in Sri Lanka!
