Private investigation is restricted in China.

Mainland China has no licence for private investigators. A 1993 Ministry of Public Security notice bans private detective agencies, and business registration authorities do not register firms as detective agencies. Practitioners work under labels such as business consultancy or market research, and police crackdowns have led to mass detentions for buying or selling personal data.1
