No specific licence

Private investigator licensing in India

No. India has no specific private investigator licence.

India has no law licensing private detectives, so detective agencies set up as ordinary businesses with no licence, exam or regulator. The Private Detective Agencies (Regulation) Bill, 2007, which would have created central and state licensing boards, was examined by the Home Affairs Standing Committee in 2009 but never enacted. The Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 (PSARA) licenses guarding services only, and in 2026 the Supreme Court sent its concerns about the unregulated sector to the Law Ministry and the Law Commission.3
